Today we met with Dr. Britz and I had to laugh when I saw him because Rodney gave the perfect description. He looks just like Tommy Franco all grown up! He is also a very down to earth Dr. who took his time to explain the finer details of Guillian-Barre Syndrome. He told me that Dad has improved considerably, praise God. He went on to say that his muscle strength and breathing have improved as well, although he is still not breathing much when he is tired or when he sleeps. Dr. Britz believes, however, that Dad will be off the ventilator within two weeks. I asked Dr. Britz how long he thought it would be before we could fly Dad home on a commercial flight (first class) and he said in order to do that Dad would have to; breathe without any assistance; control his bowel movements; and sit upright on his own strength. The Dr.’s best estimation was an additional 4-6 weeks after he comes off the ventilator, this means it could be two more months before he comes home. Let’s pray that God will accelerate the process.
Today while we were visiting, Dad asked for his favorite drink… Ginger Ale! To my amazement the nurse said he could have it if he wanted. Unfortunately they didn’t have Ginger Ale, but they had his next favorite drink… Club Soda! So we served him some with a syringe and he swallowed it! He was actually able to swallow. He hasn’t swallowed anything in six weeks! It was amazing to see… he looked very satisfied and he kept asking for more. When we left him he looked content.
